What is bitcoin?

Bitcoins are an online currency (You can think of it similar to paypal) that is not dependent on any national currency or backed by gold or anything like that. The system is most simply described by this video.

The great part about Bitcoin is it is 100% anonymous. There are no accounts, there is nothing that links you to your bitcoin wallet. You can spend at receive money without anyone ever knowing anything about you.

How do I get bitcoins?

  • Mining
If you have a nice Graphics card you can use your GPU and join a pool of other miners to break blocks and over time earn a bitcoin or two. Go check out the mining forums : http://forum.bitcoin.org/?board=14.0
  • Bitcoin Faucet
A user by the name of Gavin is a big fan of Bitcoin and really wants to see it succeed. He is offering 0.02 bitcoins for free on his site, anyone can claim them for free once. It's a great way to get users started with bitcoin! http://freebitcoins.appspot.com/
  • Selling/services
Finally, the best way to make BTC is to make it the same way everyone else does, By selling items or selling services. There is a spot on the forum for that as well. http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?board=5.0

  • Buy them
The mtgox exchange is the most notable source to buy and sell Bitcoins at their most up to date worth. At the time of writing this, 1 BTC is worth roughly $9USD
